An Ounce and An Inch
// January 12th, 2010 // Gab
This afternoon we took the girls for their three month check-up and despite a rocky ride to and fro thanks to Ms. Ava, the overall appointment was great. (For some reason Ava HATED being in the stroller this time so she cried the whole way there and back. The entire one mile walk.)
Ella now weighs 12 pounds, 15 ounces and measures 24.75 inches long. Ava is closing the gap fast coming in at 12 pounds, 14 ounces and measuring 23.75 inches. For anyone that’s curious they have the same head circumference at 40 centimeters. The girls got two more vaccinations today and it wasn’t pretty. Thankfully they let us stay in the room to calm them down and give them bottles afterward.
In addition to this regular check-up, we were anxious to talk with our pediatrician about Ella’s neck and flat spot. During the last check-up she had advised us to look into physical therapy for Ella because she doesn’t turn her head as easily to the left as she does the right. We did as we were told and Ella will begin regular therapy appointments starting next week. She doesn’t have a serious problem, but there is a definite resistance to the left side. It’s as if she has a stiff neck on that side. The physical therapist though in turn suggested we talk to our pediatrician about getting Ella a helmet to correct her flat spot. If you’ve never seen one of these, click here. I wasn’t happy with this suggestion and so we wanted to get our pediatrician’s take on the matter. Thankfully she thought the helmet would be too drastic at this point. She thought once Ella starts her therapy and begins to sit up and eventually start crawling, everything will even out and it may take up to nine months to do so. Obviously if when we see her next time the flat spot is worse then she may refer us to a specialist, but for now she is not worried. She will also help us evaluate the therapy to see if it is helping as we will continue to have monthly check-ups with her. While Ava doesn’t have any problem turning her neck either way, she still favors the right side as well. Her flat spot is starting to look better though. We will probably take what we learn from the therapy and apply it to Ava too.
Sorry there aren’t any pictures this time, but we were all tired from our trip today. I’ll try to get some this week!

Hopefully she wont need the helmet. I have known several children that had to get them and they did great with them though.
